
Referee Classification
Anyone 18 and over who completes the basic referee course can begin their employed work and work towards higher accreditation levels.
SAMBO Federation of Australia Pathway
The SAMBO Referee Classification System provides a clear pathway for referees to progress from beginner level to international officiating.
Referees advance based on training, experience, and practical performance at competitions.


Referee Levels
Club Referee
This is the entry level. Club referees may officiate club and training competitions.
State (Regional) Referee
State referees are authorised to officiate official competitions at state or regional level.
National Referee
National referees are divided into three categories:

Category C – Entry national level
Category B – Intermediate national level
Category A – Highest national category
International Referee
International referees may:
​
- Represent their country at international competitions
- Participate in international seminars
- Officiate international championships
- Receive financial support for officiating activities from the international federation


Highest National Level – Category A
To achieve National Referee Category A (the highest national level), a referee must:
​
- Officiate national championships in Combat SAMBO, Sport SAMBO, and Beach SAMBO.
- Demonstrate consistent, high-quality and error-free officiating.
- Show excellent knowledge of the rules and strong practical judging skills.
Who Can Become a Referee?
Men and women aged 18 to 55 years
Must complete an official referee training course
Must follow ethical and professional standards of officiating
